El templo de mampostería fue construido en 1835 y bendecido en 1839. En 1918, el terremoto que sufrió la Isla causó graves daños a la edificación, principalmente a sus dos torres y el altar mayor. La reconstrucción estuvo a cargo del arquitecto Francisco Porrata Doria. En 1924, mediante Decreto Pontifical, el Papa Pío XI declaró “Catedral” al antiguo templo católico, como resultado de la creación de la Diócesis de Ponce. El primer Obispo fue el sacerdote estadounidense Edwin V. Byrne, nombrado en 1925.
